Introduction

In this class, we discuss the ideal state of service leadership. Service leadership is a practice, continuously worked on. In daily interactions you will come across people who are not practicing this style of leadership. How do you navigate this? How would you navigate difficult conversations and working relationships in the world as a Service leader?

Find out with this metaphor: “Beans and Noses”, discussing controlling outcomes, and offering opportunities for people learn on their own timelines. Through this metaphor we can all become stronger service leaders.

Assignment

  1. Read the article by Jared Spool called “Beans and Noses” https://articles.centercentre.com/beans-and-noses/
  2. Write a reflection paper (1 to 2 pages) that answers the following:
    1. In what ways does this article and the "beans and noses" metaphor relate to Service leadership?
    2. Describe a time when you faced your own "beans and noses" situation in a professional setting (work, school, group work). Tell the story of what happened.
    3. How did you handle the situation at the time?
    4. Who had the bean up their nose? You? Others? All of you?
    5. How'd you react to the beans up others’ noses at the time?
    6. Jared talks about being there in support of people who are ready to move forward, on their own timeline. In hindsight, after hearing the "beans and noses" metaphor and defining "Service leadership", what, if anything, would you do differently today in the situation you described?
