We explored the problem space of using asynchronous video in hiring. Our client, UX Cabin, was interested in improving efficiency in hiring UX professionals by using asynchronous (or recorded, one-way) videos to cover basic interview questions, gain a sense of the candidate’s soft skills, and to remove the scheduling obstacles inherent in live interviewing. Our key findings and insights, as well as details and full artifacts of this work are below.

️⃣ Existing products focus primarily on the employer experience, largely disregarding candidate needs.

️⃣ Candidates generally feel uncomfortable with asynchronous video interviewing and may avoid applying to jobs requiring AVIs if they are able to do so.

️⃣ Job candidates are highly motivated to improve their interviewing skills and confidence.

️⃣ Hiring managers prioritize making better hires faster. Given the volume of job applicants in the current landscape, a major pain point for hiring managers is the time-consuming process of reviewing, vetting and interviewing applicants.

️⃣ Because of this, the team decided to focus for first MVP on giving UX job candidates tools to develop their skills and confidence when interviewing.

️⃣ The long-view is to connect candidates and companies with transparency, to make better hires faster for both sides. As the next phases work and iterate, this long view may change, and the steps to get there are yet to be written.
